VALLEY OF FLOWERS:
The world famous Valley is situated in the upper
expansion of Bhyundar Ganga in the far interior of Garhwal Himalayas. The
valley was introduced to the world in 1973 as the Valley of Flowers by Frank
S. Smith mountaineer, explorer and botanist. It is an irresistible treat for
naturalist’s ecologists, environmentalists, zoologists, ornithologist,
trekkers, tourist and pilgrims. A thoughtful memorial is also there in hounour
of another botanist Ms. Margarate Legge who lost her life here while studying
further in 1939.
As though created by nature itself, the beauty of the park is enhanced by the Pushpawati river flowing in the vicinity, overlooked by the towering Rataban peak in the background. The Valley of Flowers is flanked on either side by majestic peaks, many capped with snow. The major portion of the Valley is on the right of Pushpawati riverbank. Many streams flowing from glacial deposits in and around , while the smaller stream can be crossed easily by wading across; the log bridges and thick glacial bridges across the large streams serve the purpose.
The Valley of Flowers is an alpine valley and has been formed by the
retreating glaciers whose periodic advance and retreat pulverised hard rocks,
resulting in a smooth U-shaped valley which was later colonized by numerous
plants adopting themselves to the harsh climatic conditions prevailing there.
From November to May – The valley remains snow covered . In June when the
ice envelop thaws it is a signal for profusion of colors hidden in petals of
alpine herbs to blaze durin July & August. Some 300 species of wild
flowers bloom here in a natural way. Some of the species are Anemone
Geranium, Marsh Marigold, Primula, Potentilla, Geum, Asters, Lilium,
Ranunculus, Corydalis, Inula, Brahm Kamal, Campanula, Pedicularis, Arisaema,
Morina, Impatiens, Bistorta, Ligularia, Anaphalis, Saxifrages, Sibbaldia,
Thermopsisi, Trollius, Cardonospsis, Dactylorhiz Cypripedium Strawberry,
Epilobium, Rhododendrons and numerous others.
The Valley remains in bloom for three months while the floral composition keeps on changing every few days. By September, the plants start podding the valley in dons tranquil shades of brown. The forest on the higher formations is full of birch trees, popularly known as Bhojpatra whose bark was supposedly used to write scriptures in ancient times. Although the main land of the Valley is about 4km from Ghanghria, flower foliage in exotic varieties can be spotted throughout the route. Apart from the flowers some species of Butterfly, Musk Deer, Blue Sheep, Himalayan Bear, Himalayan Mouse- Hare, Snow Leopard & some Himalayan birds are also found in this area.
